"If you want to understand a society, take a good look at the drugs it uses. And what can this tell you about American culture? Well, look at the drugs we use. Except for pharmaceutical poison, there are essentially only two drugs that Western civilization tolerates Caffeine from Monday to Friday to energize you enough to make you a productive member of society, and alcohol from Friday to Monday to keep you too stupid to figure out the prison that you are living in." -Bill Hicks

As a young teacher trying to inspire and save advisees from expulsion, Nick Neary immerses himself into the secret rituals and lives of his students, entering a world of excess beneath the campus that threatens everything, including himself. As a dorm parent, Mr. Neary battles his obligations to inform the deans about the ills he has witnessed with his visceral urge to crawl deeper into the clandestine underbelly to learn more. The Ritalin Orgy is the unmitigated truth of decadence, degenerates, and the debauchery which encompasses America's most prominent prep schools.

I am not the target audience for this book. I am a twenty-something woman who typically reads science fiction and fantasy novels, but I wanted to branch out and try something different. I realize that the target audience for this novel may find this book amazing. I, however, found it incredibly stressful and disturbing. First, I will say that Dexter's writing style is great. His way with words makes me truly jealous. I wish I could be as colorful and creative in my descriptions when I write. However, I didn't like his main character, Nick, from the start. Nick goes to the boarding school expecting to get involved in the drug culture. Immediately, he refers to the students as "delinquents," "degenerates," and other words that are likely not allowed in an Amazon review. Nick is supposed to be a "dorm dad," in a sense. His job is to look out for the boys living in his dorm. Instead, he repeatedly turns a blind eye when students --children-- are engaging in activities that could get them killed. In one scene, he takes it even further and intentionally injures a student by flipping the student's mattress while he is sleeping, resulting in the student sustaining significant injuries. Again, I mention that this story involves underage students engaging in risky behavior. Scenes include students overdosing on drugs, cutting their tongues off while high, giving themselves or the main character significant injuries, killing animals, and performing sexual acts on each other under staircases. I understand that these are the sorts of things that do happen, but it is one shocking event after the other in this novel, to the point where the story is not believable. If this were a real school, it would be shut down due to the number of students being hospitalized. Finally, there is no real plot. The book is one scene after another like the ones described above. Readers are carried through the book by riding one explosive scene after another, but the story never actually goes anywhere. If you are just looking for pure entertainment and are into the drug culture, this book is likely for you. It will repeatedly shock you. However, if you are not into this sort of topic, I recommend finding another book. This one may be too much.

The Ritalin Orgy edition by Matthew Dexter Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The “Ritalin Orgy” is one of those books that you’ll remember ten years after reading it. The story documents the life of teachers and students living at an affluent boarding school. Normally one thinks of upstanding young men and women working hard to obtain an excellent education, inside of a lovely antique boarding school with its old stone buildings and beautiful greenery. But in “The Ritalin Orgy” this is not the case and actually is one hundred and eighty degrees the opposite. The students partake in every form of debauchery imaginable, within the sex, drugs and alcoholic categories. The main character of the story, David McClure (one of the school teachers) is tasked with the responsibility of guiding a group of students (sort of like a den-mother) and handing out demerits when they are caught violating one of the school rules. But McClure tends to look the other way when he walks in on an “illegal” act and frequently ends up joining in. I’ve never attended a boarding school, so I can’t validate the authenticity of the experiences described in this book, but they seem reasonably believable. The characters are developed and even a little quirky with one walking around constantly with a clip board and owning a dog that has a profane word shaved into his fur. Another character is named Dean Doberman and lives true to his name by busting kids left and right for any infraction they might be involved with (for example-cooking spaghetti on a hot plate in the dorm room and smoking cigarettes). The author, Matthew Dexter is an incredible writer and the story flows from his pen like melted gold. His phrasing and descriptions keep you looking for more and his wit provides a chuckle here-and-there. When I was a teenager, I would have thought extreme behavior like this to be exciting, adventurous and cool. But as an older and wiser person it tends to seem dark and scary, but dark and scary in an interesting way. Kind of like, when you see a car accident on the side of the road and you can’t stop yourself from looking.
I first heard about this book as it set at a prep school we are considering for our child. My first impression as I dug in was the typical parent fear, reading with teeth clenched as it describes the worst of prep school drugs, bullying, a-hole deans etc. There is truth in every aspect of the characterization. I was drawn in right away with the narrator, a new instructor living in the boy dorm. His conflict lies in being their friend and mentor and all that implies lying to keep them from getting in trouble, partaking in their revelry, VS being an adult who must impart rules and justice. The author is a great writer and this book should be more widely read IMO. It does feel as if he is writing from certain experiences which make it at times feel more memoir than fiction. However by its completion, fear not parent, you gain an understanding more so of the dark unberbelly that lies in all of us. It is not prep school to fear but our own failures as parents, teachers.
I think it could be read within a school context or book group as there is so much to discuss and analyze. I highly recommend this book, it will stay with you long after the final page.
